The Design Build Turnkey Project
Aside from helping provide information on a variety of lodging, restaurant, attractions and all the great city of Charleston, South Carolina has to offer, the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau assists the media with research, organization of activities, coordination of media rates, special passes and materials on the Charleston area. In order to help facilitate these operations their vistor center needed upgrades installed to go along with existing internal components.
Kiosk and Floor Screen System at the Charleston Visitors Center |
The Challenge
The High Output creative design team was asked by Talisman Media to assist and engineer Talisman’s unique approach to the integration of state-of-the-art A/V systems with an existing floor map in order to allow these new and old technologies to co-exist. Once the creative tasks were done High Output went to work on the systems design and installations.
Our Systems Design Installations:
- rigging
- audio systems
- video systems
- computer networking
- electrical
- glazier (glass work) designed by Talisman and executed outside of High Output
Our Solution
High Output and Talisman Media went to the drawing board and emerged with a plan utilizing a system consisting of five computers with dual video outputs. an Ethernet camera, a midi control system, a Cisco VPN box, five projectors, four gaming panel type trackballs and an IP KVM.
The five computers are networked together allowing file sharing between them. By using the installed VPN box to establish a secure connection to the visitor's center, the system can be remotely troubleshooted and allows Talisman Media to upload new content or software updates.
Of the five computers in the system, one runs the projector for a large screen which is located above the map on the visitors center floor. The other four are linked to smaller screens and display video and content at the individual kiosks, based on where the individual clicks on the map in front of them. The trackballs are translucent with LED lighting below to create a glow effect, and each has an attached infared sensor which automatically illuminates the trackball and kiosk screen when someone walks up.
The Outcome
The Charleston Visitor Center now has a beautifully appointed interior with high tech multimedia capabilities that are very nearly beyond belief. The system is made up of four kiosks, each with an individual screen showing a map of the Charleston area and trackball pointer, for a visitor to use at will.
Whenever someone makes a choice at any one of the kiosks the system begins to display that content and video on all of the screens simultaneously. The presentation begins with a projected graphic map of Charleston onto the special floor surface above the diorama map. The floor actually turns into a screen which allows the users to select a tourist destination from the 10 ft x 10 ft map on the floor, or from a duplicate graphic map on the 50” widescreen map above their kiosk. As the presentation ends LED lights on the underside of the screen illuminate to highlight the map below once again.
This impressively high tech system with its multi-displays and audio integration is a must-see attraction for anyone who visits Charleston, South Carolina. It is not only entertaining, but is also educational at the same time providing all with little known historical and geographical facts about the area.
